Chandler Ave. Sherman Oaks, CA

Back in 1910 Chandler Ave. was split up into a road for cars, a Red car trolley line and a dirt road for horses and carriages. Originally the Pacific Electric Red Cars went down the center where there are now trees lining the middle of the median.  This rail line was built to attract buyers to cheaper housing lots that were further away from the city.  The rail line gave them convenient access to the city from cheaper plots of land.  Developing cheaper land outside the city and attracting people to these plots by giving them access by rail is what quickly turned Los Angeles into a sprawl city.  The rail lines were never made to make money but instead be a means to an end for developers.  This tactic mixed with the rise of the automobile and freeways led to the ultimate demise of the railway in 1941.   Today you will see that the road has changed quite a bit but still holds true to some of its characteristics.  As you drive the street now you can still see some of the original homes that were built and the large plots of land that came with the original development of this area.
